THE DOMESTIC CAT – FELIS CATUS
The origins of the domestic cat date back to ancient Egypt, where people are believed to have begun domesticating the Libyan wildcat as long as four thousand years ago. The reason for this was the need to protect grain stores from the depredations of mice. Cats were worshipped as deities and even mummified.  They were brought to Europe by Roman legionaries before the birth of Christ. They even became a status symbol. Unfortunately, the Middle Ages were less kind to cats, and they were associated with witchcraft and black magic. Today cats are found all over the world and have the status of pets. Domestic cats come in many different varieties, since reproduction is left to nature.
EUROPEAN SHORTHAIR
A domestic breed resulting from deliberate crossing. Breeders follow a prescribed standard and the breed is accepted by all major cat registries. This cat must show no traces of other breeds – this applies to body size and shape and to the colour and structure of the coat. The coat is short, thick and glossy. Found in a wide range of colours including single-colour, multicolour and with various striped patterns. All eye colours are permitted. Many fine domestic cats would correspond to the standard, meaning that they could have obtained an initial experimental pedigree at an assessment by an international expert panel and been qualified as a European shorthair.
NEVA MASQUERADE
The breed was created by crossing the Siberian cat with cats showing Siamese point colouration. From these breeds they have inherited the blue eye colour and the darker colouration of paws, tail, ears and face. The breed owes its name to this colouration, which is supposed to be reminiscent of carnival masks, while "Neva" comes from the river flowing through St Petersburg, where these cats first appeared.The Neva Masquerade is a medium to large breed with a very dense, medium-length coat that is even thicker in winter and forms a fluffy collar around the neck. The tail is very bushy. The outer coat does not absorb water and protects the cat from damp and cold. Found in various colours, with striped variants particularly attractive.
BRITISH SHORTHAIR
This breed originates from England and is the result of the deliberate crossing of domestic cat breeds. It was presented as a breed at the first Crystal Palace Cat Show in London in
1871. In
the early twentieth century long-haired breeds came to the fore and the British shorthair was almost forgotten. After the Second World War it was crossed with other breeds in an effort to revive it, and this resulted in a wider range of colour variants and today's standard. Has an extremely dense coat consisting of short, erect hair that gives it a "teddy bear" appearance. The head is round, with beautiful big round eyes and full cheekbones. They come in numerous colours, with eye colour conditioned by the colour of the coat. Today the British Longhair is also a recognised breed.
MAINE COON
The breed originates from Maine in North America and is the largest domesticated cat breed. Maine Coon cats were first mentioned in print in the nineteenth century. Because of its size, its somewhat wild appearance and, in contrast to its appearance, its exceedingly docile character, it is a popular breed all over the world, including in Slovenia. The coat is medium-long and silky. It is slightly longer around the neck and forms a ruff. The tail is long, with thick long fur. The Maine Coon has a square head, large upright ears with tufts and big oval eyes. The breed varies widely in terms of coat colour, colour combination and pattern.
